Serres: Geographical Description of the Region

The Regional Unit of Serres is located in northern Greece and presents a rich geographical relief that contributes to the great biodiversity of the area. Lakes: Lake Kerkini, one of the most important wetlands in Greece, is located in the western part of P.E. Serron. The lake is a refuge for many species of birds and aquatic animals. Rivers: The Strymonas River crosses the area from north to south, contributing to the fertility of the plains and creating rich habitats for fish, amphibians and other species. Mountains: To the north rise the mountains of Menoiki and Aggistro, while to the west lies the mountain range of Beles, which is a natural border with Bulgaria. The mountains are home to forests of beech, oak and fir, offering shelter to wild animals such as wolves, bears and deer. Sea: Although Serres does not have direct access to the sea, it is close to the Thracian Sea and the shores of Amphipolis, which are historically linked to the area.
