Insects & Minerals of Serres

A variety of insects

In the valley of Serres we can meet a variety of insects due to the rich ecosystem. Some common types include: Bees (Apis mellifera): Important for pollination, found in agricultural areas. Butterflies: Like Lepidoptera and Sugarleaf (Pieris brassicae). Beetles (Coleoptera): Important for the decomposition of organic matter. Locusts (Orthoptera): Common in grasslands and agricultural crops. Dragonflies (Odonata): Found near bodies of water. These insects play a critical role in the balance of the ecosystem.

Day (Diurnals) and night (nocturnal)

Day (Diurnals) and night (nocturnal) insects show significant differences: Colors: Diurnal insects, such as butterflies, usually have vivid colors to attract mates and communicate. Nocturnal animals such as moths are darker or cover colors for camouflage. Eyes: Nocturnal insects have larger eyes for better vision in the dark, while diurnal insects have compound eyes to better perceive daylight. Activity: Diurnals are most active in sunlight, while nocturnals forage and mate at night.

Serres minerals

The Serres area is rich in minerals due to its geological diversity, which includes mountains, valleys and rivers. Some of the most important minerals found in the area are: Marble: Mainly in the mountains of Lailia and Vrontos, known for their quality. Gypsum and limestone: Widely used in construction and industry. Lignite: Mined in some areas of Macedonia. Iron and lead ores: They are found in some places in the mountains and deposits of the region. These minerals are of significant economic and industrial value to the region.

Lucanus cervus (stag beetle)

Is one of the largest beetles in Europe. Males are easily recognizable by their large, antler-like mandibles, which they use in combat with other males during the mating season. Stag beetles are primarily found in woodlands and areas with decaying wood, where they lay their eggs. Despite their fearsome appearance, they are harmless to humans.
